Junoon translates as The Obsession, and is a 1978 Hindi film directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by Shashi Kapoor. The movie tells the story of Vikram who nearly gets killed by a cursed tiger in the jungle. His friend is killed but the tiger injures Vikram before he shoots it dead. The spirit of the tiger gets into Vikram and as he lies in hospital he realises there is an evil presence within him. The voice of his dead friend tells him that he will turn into the beast on the full moon every month and urges him to kill himself. But Vikram vows to live with whatever is in store for him.

She said she always had a feeling of a double life being an Indian as well as British. Set in London the film follows the life of an Indian family as Sanjay is widowed by his wife’s sudden death. He is left to develop a closer relationship with his three daughters, whose lives he has to come to terms with. Alone and angry Sanjay has to face his own demons and finally at the funeral he is forced to see his daughters for who they really are and not what he expected them to be. A very timely look at ethnic relations in Britain.

Black is 2005 Indian film in Hindi and English directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Black is the story of a blind and deaf girl and her relationship with her teacher who later himself develops Alzheimer’s disease. The first half of the film is an adaptation of Helen Keller’s autobiography The Story of my Life. Black won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and eleven Filmfare Awards. Time Magazine selected it as number five amongst its Top Ten Movies of the year 2005 from across the globe.

This is a 2005 Indian movie based on the life of Mangal Pandey, an Indian soldier who is famed for his role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Directed by Ketan Mehta and produced by Boddy Bedi the film’s screenplay is by Farrukh Dhondy. The lead role of Mangal Pandey is played by well known Hindi actor Aamir Khan. The rebellion was also known as The First War of Indian Independence and the film depicts the soldier’s contribution to it.

Gangaajal is a 2003 Hindi film directed by Parkash Jah and starring Ajay Devgan, Gracy Singh and Mukesh Tawari. The movie depicts the blinding incident at Bhagalpur. SP Amit Kumar is given charge of the Tejpur District in Bihar. The area is full of crime, including that committed by the local police. Amit realises that local politician Sadhu Yadav benefits from this and he arrests his son Sunder. While Sunder is released quickly some police officers become frustrated ands pour acid into the eyes of two of Yadav’s men, blinding them. The media is outraged and crime comes to a standstill as the police are treated with respect. A powerful Indian movie.

Mother India is a 1957 Bollywood film directed by Mehboob Khan. The film is a re-make of his earlier “Aurat” in 1940, and stars Nargis Dutt, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar and Raj Kumar. In 2005 Indiatimes ranked the movie amongst the top 25 Must See Bollywood Films. The film ranked number three in the list of all-time box office hits. Mother India was India’s first submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1958 and lost to Federico Felini’s “Nights of Cabiria” by just one vote!
