In Bimal Roy’s original 1955 movie Devdas, childhood sweethearts Devdas and Paro grow up in a small village with a love hate relationship, which changes to love when they grow older. The story develops as Devdas’ father does not approve of his son’s marriage or even friendship with Paro. He sends Devdas away to Calcutta where he is introduced to a dancer, Chandramukhi, who adores him and falls hopelessly in love. Sadly most of Devdas’ time is pent in a drunken stupor pining for Paro and he fails to notice Chandramukhi’s devotion to him. A heartrending tale of love and sorrow, Devdas is an original fore runner of Indian cinema.

Leaving Home is a film about life on the road with one of India’s most prominent bands, Indian Ocean. Jaideep Varma, who took on this project in 2006, brings us on their journey as they travel with their music. He believes that the film showcases one of India’s greatest musical phenomena since Independence. In Leaving Home he tells their inspiring story of fiercely defending their integrity in an increasingly commercial world. Delving into the lives of the four band members, guitarist and vocalist Sushmit Sen, bass guitar and vocalist, Rahul Ram, drummer and percussionist, Amit Kilam, and tabla and vocalist, Asheem Chakravarty, we see the real Indian Ocean. The film features extensive interviews with the band members, their family members and people they’ve worked with over the years.

This modern take on Devdas directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is based on the original novella by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. This version is the third Bollywood/Hindi production and the first in colour. The film stars well known Bollywood players, Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai in its leading roles. Bhansali’s Devdas was, at the time of its release, the most expensive Bollywood movie ever produced, with six alternative languages available. Shakrukh Kahn’s impressive performance as the alcoholic Devdas, for which he won a Filmfare Award, is considered one of the best of his career. Another memorable feature of the film is the song “Dola Re Dola” which was a huge hit due to it’s unique dance duet between Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit.

Harishchandrachi is Mumbai based theatre actor/director’s Paresh Mokashi’s debut movie, made in 2009, and was India’s official entry for the Oscars that year. The film is based on the making of “Raja Harishchandra”, which was India’s first full length feature film made in 1913 by the pioneer of Indian cinema Dadasaheb Phalke. The story is about the beginning of the Indian film industry when two business partners fall out resulting in one leaving. Phalke goes on to travel to England to make his own silent movie, a struggle which eventually brings him success. Thus one of the biggest film industries in the world is born. Its light comic narration makes it an enjoyable film.

Manorma Six Feet Under is a an Indian thriller directed and co-written in 2007 by Navdeep Singh. The lead roles are played by Abhay Deol, Raima Sen and Bollywood legend Gul Panang. It is a film noir movie about an amateur detective from Rajasthan in a sleepy town, who find himself caught in a web of lies, deceit and murder. The movie is based on “Chinatown” 1973, Roman Polanski, with the basic premise being similar to the original, with some changes in the representation of characters and some key plot changes. The makers of Manorma Six Feet Under acknowledge the inspiration from the original by using the sequence where Jack Nicholson’s character gets his nose slashed on a television.
