NO WAVE FESTIVAL
Curated by Treasa O’Brien

k

No Wave

No Wave is term now given to a loose collective of musicians, filmmakers, and hanger-outers that cross-pollenated in New York’s Lower East Side in the late 1970s.  Ireland’s experimental filmmaker Vivienne Dick started making her first films within that milieu, and has been called the ‘quintessential No Wave filmmaker’ by Village Voice critic Jim Hoberman. No Wave films were characterised by a DIY aesthetic, an anti-establishment politics and were first shown in the clubs where many of the musicians who acted as cast were performing.

This festival will take place over a weekend in CFCP and feature screenings of little known and hard to see films by Vivienne Dick, James Nares, Bette Gordon, Eric Mitchell, Beth and Scott B and others. Plus a documentary Blank City made in 2009 about the whole scene.

The festival will include live performances by key No Wave bands, James Chance (of the Contortions and Lydia Lunch (of Teenage Jesus) and more.   Concerts will take place offsite but may be complemented by more intimate sessions in the CFCP space.

Developed in collaboration with LUX, Treasa O’Brien, Vivienne Dick, James Chance & Lydia Lunch.

The Centre for Creative Practices aims to develop, sustain, promote and present new arts and creative practices in Dublin and Ireland through the organisation of artistic events and education.

The current climate might seem to be against us. We dare to believe the opposite. We believe that culture is a fundamental value for every society, that the arts are an indispensable system of reference for personal and collective values, an example of diversity and tolerance and a vital tool to neutralise the stagnation.

About CFCP

The Centre for Creative Practices (CFCP) established in 2009 in Dublin is the only cultural venue in Ireland devoted to enhancing the visibility of resident international artists to wider audiences. Along with this the Centre promotes experimental and independent arts projects as well as multidisciplinary and multicultural collaborations.

CFCP is committed to giving artists the possibility to improve their financial situation through offering artists workshops and seminars in our venue. CFCP also offers promotional strategies for interesting artistic initiatives.

CFCP facilitates both programmes by the international and local artists through provision of a gallery, workshop space and a venue on very accessible rates as well as presents its own programme.
